Business Case
Wipelot RTLS Aviation Platform has been used for customers in aviation industry in Turkey for several years. Thousands of Nodes have been deployed for vehicles, equipment and many IoT readers have been installed on site to collect lots of information real time. Platform provides real time location information to Management Systems.

Airport flight operations consist of many tasks connected to each other. All ground services, airline operators, airport authorities, catering services, work in collaboration in order to finish all relevant tasks on time. But managing lots of flights and keeping related tasks synchronized is a challenging problem. Before each flight several tasks should be completed. These tasks may be categorized in two main sections.

 Aircraft Inside Operations: De-boarding, cabin-off, Debriefing, Crew in, Cleaning, Catering Load, Security Check, Passenger Announcement, Boarding, Passenger Counting

 Aircraft Outside Operations: Block on, Aerobridge-stair attach, Unloading, Fuel, Drainage, aerobridge-stair detach, Block off, Pushback

A change in time plan of a flight for any reason, affects other flights. Gates, runways, terminals, passenger-crew buses, pushbacks, and similar resources are limited. And combination of these limits creates airport capacity.

Similar to all other business, the aviation business itself deals with many things. People, weather, aircrafts, connected flights, baggage, air traffic, and other issues. So there is always a risk to complete a task on time. Unexpected problems may always occur. Additionally, many resources like vehicle, equipment and employee have to be used efficiently and on time to overcome these risks.

General Requirement
Some of tasks defined above require real time location of resources or assets and information. And the result information of one task might be transferred to another task. All these tasks are handled by these resources. Real time data flow between airport area and BI tools is a mandatory issue. To increase airport efficiency and capacity, meaning handling more flight, manual operations should be minimized, and tools like prediction - planning – operation systems should be in charge for managing these resources. But all these system requires real time data of current state.

Solution Platform

WIPELOT AVIATION RTLS IoT PLATFORM provides an excellent solution for gathering location and other information from the Airport site.

Solution consists of following modules:

 Vehicle Tracking: Special designed vehicle units and optional APRON readers are used to track vehicles. Additional to RF hardware, also other communication alternatives supported by vehicle unit device are Wi-Fi and optionally GSM. GPS + Sub meter ranging technology ensures high accuracy (below one meter) tracking in all areas like inside buildings, chute areas, under terminal roofs, under aerobridges etc. So this feature provides exactly right gate information, helps elimination of dead reckoning which is very important for task management. This technology is a combination of indoor + outdoor tracking. Besides it does not rely on GSM operator, this provides 7x24 consistent bandwidth, closed, maintenance free, secure and scalable system

 Target Vehicle: Bus, Pushback, Baggage Truck, Line maintenance cars etc.

 Usage Area: All airport area, including indoor areas

 Non-Motorized Equipment Tracking: System is able to track all non-motorized equipment at whole Airport APRON area, also at indoor areas. Sub meter tracking ability of these equipment is highly valuable since they are out of control if they have been left somewhere in airport. With additional sensors attached to Equipment tag, current status of GPU on/off, Dolly empty/full information may also be collected.


 Target Equipment: Baggage Dolly (Trolley), GPU, Towbar, similar valuable asset, Maintenance Equipment etc.

 Usage Area: All airport area, including hangars, warehouses, terminals and similar indoor areas.

 Employee Tracking: Similar to equipment, employees carrying Staff tag can be tracked with sub meter accuracy in whole Airport area including indoor areas. “Who is in which vehicle?”, “How many people in which gate?”, and similar type questions shall be easily answered.

 Target Employee: Any employee i.e. ground operators, drivers, cleaners, chiefs, maintenance team, and contractors.

 Usage Area: All airport area, or indoor areas hangars, warehouses, terminals etc.

 Aircraft Tracking: Aircraft location information with the above location information is also important for some business cases. These location and flight information might be imported from other running systems but if required, optionally, integrated ADS-B receivers to APRON readers provide real-time ground aircraft positions to central management system. This provides excellent combination of current vehicle, equipment, employee, aircraft location information in one environment. Since accurate timing inside the readers already exists for sub-meter tracking features, this might also be used for MLAT.

 SDK - Integration Components: System consists of Web services, Remoting SDK and other integration and development options in order to integrate legacy systems or develop custom software using this platform.
